Nexus 4 charging orbGoogle’s Nexus 4 smartphone,  unveiled in October, was announced with a wireless charging accessory, but that device has been unattainable for Nexus users until now. The charger, dubbed the Nexus Orb, went on sale yesterday in the Google Play store.

For $60, Nexus 4 users can wirelessly charge their smartphones by placing them on top of the orb. It is built using the Qi inductive charging standard, that allows magnetic coils in both the phone and the dock to wirelessly transfer energy between the two devices.

Because Google’s Nexus orb uses the same standard wireless charging technology as other manufacturers, phones from Nokia or HTC that also have Qi charging setups will work in Google’s device, too.

The Nexus 4 isn’t likely to be the only sought-after handset with wireless charging capabilities. Rumors abound that Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S4 will also have wireless charging available.

Google’s orb will charge the Nexus 4 in about four hours.
