Google Voice is quietly introducing a feature that will let users port their numbers into the system for a $20 fee.

Google VoiceThe porting capability appears to be slowly rolling out to a limited number of users as a beta test. As of this writing, neither reporter at szsu.com has a link to port in their Google Voice account.

Although you could always forward a call to your Google Voice number on to a cell phone or other phone, the application had never allowed you to bring your number, until now.

To check and see if you are one of the lucky few who can port a number, look for the “Change/Port” link next to your current number in the Settings of your Google Voice account. Click it to start the process of porting your number.  Google will assess if it’s eligible for porting, and then prompt you for payment of the $20 fee through Google Checkout.
