Adobe to ditch standard software installations

By Paul Thomson :: 10:13 PM

Software publisher Adobe, well known for its Creative Suite of design and layout programs, such as PhotoShop and InDesign, has announced it is ditching traditional packaged software solutions, and moving to cloud-based delivery only.

New versions of Adobe’s Creative Suite product will now be solely available through the company’s Creative Cloud subscription service. Creative Cloud was launched in 2012, and now nearly a half-million users spend between $10 and $50 per month for the rights to access and use the software.

On June 17, new editions of Photoshop, InDesign, Premiere and other Adobe programs will be released. These programs make up what used to be called Adobe Creative Suite. With the move to cloud-based delivery, Adobe will change the name from Creative Suite to Creative Cloud – CC for short.

The software will still be installed on the end user’s computer media, but it will require a once-per-month connection to the Internet to verify that the license is still valid. At the time of verification, any updates to the software can be automatically downloaded if the user’s subscription is paid up.

New Adobe customers pay will pay a fee of $49.99 per month for CC. Current owners of Adobe CS3 through CS5 will be offered a discount prices of $29.99 per month for their first year of service. Educational pricing for the CC product will also be $29.99 per month.

High School Senior Cheers Up Dumped Prom Girl

Stood up prom girl gets her dance.

By Paul Thomson :: 9:52 PM

The photo above had a sad beginning, but a happy ending.

Originally posted to Reddit, by a user who goes by the handle “MiiMZYv2,” he said that the girl came in to the North Carolina restaurant where he works, wearing her prom dress, and said that she had just been stood up by her prom date. She is 14 and a freshman in high school.

“She came into my work crying because her prom date stood her up the night of,” he wrote in the Reddit post’s comments. “She left smiling because I had another customer play music while I asked her to dance in front of everyone.”

The poster, who is 18, and a senior in high school, says because of the age difference, he’s not interested in dating the girl, but believed that what he did by dancing with her was, “the right thing to do.” It’s not clear if the two attend the same high school. They did exchange phone numbers, however, and have been talking.

If they give awards for Prom King and Prom Queen of random North Carolina burger joints, these two are a sure thing.

Barnes and Noble drops prices on Nook tablet for Mother's Day.

By Katherine McClosky :: 9:04 PM

Barnes & Noble already made headlines this week with its Nook reader and tablet by announcing that it would open up the proprietary Android platform to allow the installation of the Google Play app store. Now, the company is making another bold move for the Nook by cutting prices for two of its offerings through Mother’s Day.

Sale prices will be as follows – the 7-inch Nook HD with 8GB will retail for $149, and the 16GB HD version for $179. Both prices reflect a $50 savings. As for the larger 9-inch Nook HD+, shopper will save $90 with prices set at $179 for the 16GB model and $209 for the for 32GB model.

“In recognition that the best gift for Mother’s Day is now even better,” said a Barnes and Noble spokesperson, “we’re proud to offer this special limited-time offer for our award-winning 7- and 9-inch tablets.”

The recent addition of Google Play capability to the tablets means that the platform now enjoys access to over 700,000 application titles in Google’s Android store – a far cry from the limited availability of apps before Google Play came along. This, coupled with the generous drop in prices makes the Nook a much more attractive competitor to Amazon’s Kindle Fire offerings as well as the Nexus 7 tablets.

Petition Seeks to Ban Google Glass Use in U.S.

Petition seeks to halt Google Glass use in United States.

By Gilbert Falso :: 9:41 PM

A petition has been initiated on the Whitehouse’s “We The People” website that seeks to ban the use of Google Glass in the United States.

The full text of the petition reads,

“Google Glass is a new twist on technology which hasn’t had clearly stated limits on the locations in US communities where it can and cannot be used. In order to protect our communities we need limitations to prevent indecent public surveillance of our friends, children, and families.

It is hard to prevent it because the hardware gives no notification that it is recording an individual at any given time.”

The Obama Administration’s “We the People” site provides a way for citizens to petition the administration to take action on a range of  issues facing the country.

Petitions on the site need to reach a certain threshold to be considered for an administration response. Currently, the petition only has two signatures – the creator and one other individual. Petitions need to have 150 virtual signatures to be searchable from the White House’s website, and must reach 100,000 signatures to be addressed by the Obama administration.

Creators of the petition have until June 2, 2013 to reach their 100,000 signature threshold.

Strange Tweets from Jose Canseco.

By Paul Thomson :: 5:25 PM

Retired Major League Baseball outfielder Jose Canseco sent out a litany of Tweets this afternoon, apparently directed at ex-girlfriend Leila Shennib.

The first Tweet came at 4:15 PM, Eastern time, with Jose saying, “I hope the innocent football player she is dating finds out what she’s up too.”

Three more Tweets closely followed, including one with a Los Angeles phone number that Canseco claims is Leila’s, where he encourages his followers to call her and tell her she is a “skank thief.”

Screenshots of Canseco’s first set of Tweets are below. [Editor’s note – we have blocked part of the phone number that Canseco originally Tweeted]

Some of the Tweets above, including the Tweet with the phone number, have since been deleted.

Canseco has now sent out three additional Tweets, with one alleging that Leila or Liela, as an alternative spelling, is a criminal, and has possible changed her name to avoid law enforcement. See below for this set of Tweets. As we noted before, this story is developing, and we will update as details and Tweets emerge.
